4. Establish business incubator

    1. Purpose: Dual bottom-line, blended value, as per...

                                                              i.      Social Value:  The Crime Collaborative has identified poor children in the New Orleans metro area as high-risk for joining the network of crime reigning sovereign in violent drug-ridden neighborhoods. This program will

      1.      get children off the street
2.
teach children marketable skills
3.      teach children business skills
4.      provide hope and motivation for kids
5.      provide a safe and independent source of income for kids
6.      provide an alternative to jails or prisons for some kids

ii.      Financial Value:  half of the profits from the business go to Conversations for Change

    1. Vision:

Community members, police, and judges refer children who are at risk of joining a network of crime to participate in the program. The children attend Saturday meetings. During the first meeting, staff work with the kids to create a "business opportunity" for each child. Volunteers teach each child a craft within the child's capability. Every Saturday the child visits the program center where he or she is provided with the tools and supplies necessary to "conduct business." Before the child returns home, staff buys the crafts from each child in cash.

While the children “conduct business” they enjoy a positive, supportive environment where they are self-motivated and experience self-discipline. They learn real-world marketable skills, and as their business progresses, they earn business cards and other items. To accompany their skill development, we teach them about all aspects of entrepreneurship from business plans to IPOs. All the while meeting friends, learning skills, earning money, and having fun.

    2. Structure:

                                                            i.      The incubator is structured as an LLC, whose incorporators consist of Conversations for Change and private shareholders.

ii.  Each child is charged a tuition that goes to a pool of money that covers the cost of materials for the kids. CfC provides scholarships to kids whose parents say they can not afford the tuition.

iii.      The LLC buys products from the kids each weekend. The LLC reserves booths at art markets to retail the items at a profit. The LLC also markets the products online. Profits cover operating costs incurred by the LLC and are afterwards shared among the owners.
